Sunderland Marine provide support to many of the New Zealand Lifeboat Institutions, including Nelson (Sealord Rescue), Sumner,Mana, Greymouth and Kaikoura lifeboats. The picture below was taken at the launch of the Kaikoura Rescue, in March 2007.
Through the Fiordland Fishermens Association, we were asked many years ago to support the installation and maintenance of two VHF Transmitting stations in the wilderness area. This to improve communication from boats to shore, particularly during emergencies, in an area where cell phone coverage is notoriously poor. The management of these VHF stations has since shifted to the Fiordland VHF Users Association, but Sunderland Marine continue to support this by paying for the annual property insurance on the towers.

Community
As a Mutual owned by and working for, its members, Sunderland Marine has always had a strong community ethos. This is perhaps best represented in New Zealand by the support given to the seafaring community, primarily fishermen but also other commercial mariners and the recreational sector. In Nelson, Sunderland Marine is one of the principal sponsors of the Seafarers Memorial Trust, a body created to remember those lost at sea, and to provide ongoing support for their families. Each year the trust organises a Blessing of the Fleet, a day when the local community can come down to the water front, attend the memorial service and blessing, watch fish being filleted, sample the product and generally join in the celebrations.

Sunderland Marine is also a sponsor of the Auckland Seafood Festival and the named sponsor of the Auckland Blessing of the Fleet, an event that marks the beginning of this festival. The next festival is scheduled for the 29th and 30th January 2010, to co-oincide with the end of the school holidays and the Auckland Festival. The 2009 event was fantastic attended by 15,000 people.
